Bachelor of Arts in Economics

The Bachelor of Arts Economics (BEC) degree programme is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified Economists in various Public and Private Organisations. It is intended for the following groups of people:

1. School leavers who want to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Economics ,

The BEC degree programme is a ZCAS University Programme offered and administered by ZCAS University. Student registration, teaching and examination take place at ZCAS.  In administering the Programme, the University observes internal and external quality assurance standards including the appointment of qualified lecturers to teach the courses.

RATIONALE

The demand for qualified economic analysts and planners who can contribute to the growth of the Zambian economy has made it necessary to introduce the BEC degree programme. ZCAS University would like to produce a product that will help to raise the standard of economic analysis and planning in the country and the region.

AIM

The aim of this programme is to equip the students with knowledge and skills in the fields of economics, in order for them to effectively operate in economics and financial systems and similar roles.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the programme, a student should be able to:

• analyse financial and economic data;

• apply economic and financial analysis to problems in real world situations; evaluate specific policy proposals based on his/her understanding of current events; and

• evaluate different conclusions to a specific economic or policy problem.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

To qualify for admission to the BEC degree programme an applicant must have any of the following:

1. Five credits at ‘O’ Level including English and Mathematics.

2. At least three ‘A’ level passes including Mathematics or equivalent.

3. Any degree from a recognised institution.

EXEMPTIONS

• A student who has, prior to admission to the BEC, attended, whether at ZCAS University or elsewhere, courses of instruction and passed examinations equivalent in standard to courses and examinations which form part of the programme of study may, subject to approval, be exempted from attendance of classes and examinations in those courses.

• No exemptions are available in respect of third and fourth year courses regardless of the candidate’s qualifications.
