BACHELOR OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This programme guide outlines the contents of the Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (BAF) degree programme and is accordingly structured as follows. The programme rationale, aim, objectives and target group are outlined in Sub-sections 1.1 to 1.4 respectively, while the admission, grading and award criteria are given in Section 2.0. Sections 3.0 – 5.0 describe the course assessment, exemptions policy and course codes respectively. Details of the course outlines are given in Section 6.0.
1.1 RATIONALE
The demand for qualified financial analysts who can contribute to the growth of the financial services sector in Zambia has made it necessary to introduce the BAF degree programme. The collaboration between UNZA and ZCAS presents an opportunity to produce a product that will help raise the standard of financial analysis knowledge and skills in the country and the region.
1.2 AIM
The aim of this programme is to equip the students with knowledge and skills in the fields of accountancy, banking and finance in order for them to effectively operate in financial systems and similar roles.
1.3 OBJECTIVES
By the end of the programme, students should be able to:
7) demonstrate thorough knowledge in fundamental theories, concepts, principles and practices of accounting, banking and finance;
8) demonstrate the critical abilities of analysis, interpretation, evaluation and judgement as applied to financial reporting, financial management, management accounting, credit risk management and taxation;
9) analyse financial information and provide investment advice to clients; and
10) collect and analyse financial data to help in solving challenges faced by organisations.
1.4 TARGET GROUP
The BAF degree programme is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified personnel with a mix of knowledge and skills in accounting and finance. Such professionals are expected to pursue careers in accounting, investment banking, management consultancy, investment analysis, financial management and investment management. It is intended for the following groups of people:
4. School leavers who wish to pursue a career in banking and finance.
5. Banking and finance employees who wish to enhance their career prospects.
6. Holders of partial accountancy qualifications such as ACCA-FIA, CIMA-CBA and ZICA-technician who wish to pursue a career in banking and finance.
7. Any eligible person who wishes to pursue a career in financial analysis.
2.0 ADMISSION, GRADING AND AWARD CRITERIA
2.1 ADMISSION CRITERIA
To qualify for admission to the BAF degree programme, an applicant must have any of the following:
a) Five credits at ‘O’ Level including English and Mathematics.
b) Part or full qualifications in ZICA, CIMA and ACCA.
c) Any relevant three year accountancy diploma from a reputable college or university.
d) Zambia Institute of Banking and Financial Services (ZIBFS) Diploma in Banking and Finance.
e) ZIBFS Advanced Professional Diploma in Banking and Financial Services
f) At least three ‘A’ level passes including Mathematics or equivalent.
g) Any degree from a recognised institution.
